How to know your skin type

How to know your skin type

Do you know your skin type? I am going to discuss with you methods on how you can know your skin type. It is important for you to know your skin type, for you to make a good skin care routine.

Just picking up some product and using it because it works for another person might not help you. You should know what type of skin you have to make your skin care routine effective. Skin care is not a `one size fits all deal`. But don’t worry, I am going to take you through the 4 methods on how to know your skin type.

Everybody’s skin is unique, but there are four main categories where your skin type will fall under. The four types of skins are dry skin, oily skin, normal or a combination of both and sensitive skin.

How to know your skin type: 1.  Naked face method

In this method you are going to cleanse your face using a mild cleanser. Gently pat it dry.  Do not apply any make up or moisturizer.  After one hour you are going to examine your face. and determine your skin type.

Dry skin type: Your skin will feel tight and dehydrated. if you feel like adding some moisturizer then you should know that you have a dry skin.

Oily skin type: After cleansing, oily skin will feel clean and oil-free, just for a short time after cleansing. After one hour, your face will feel greasy. If your cheek is shiny, in addition to your forehead and nose, you most likely have oily skin.

Normal / mixed skin type: Your skin will feel the same way as it did before the cleansing. You might feel the need to add a little moisturizer on your cheeks, but generally, your skin will not feel too parched or sensitive.

Sensitive skin type: You will see dry patches. Your face may feel irritated and itchy, due to the use of the cleanser. When this happens frequently and with a range of products, I recommend you introduce only one new product at a time.  This rule applies to both skincare and cosmetics. Patch testing a new formula on your inner forearm is an excellent way to minimize potential reactions on your face. If your skin shows no sign of flaring up, apply the formula to the area behind one of your ears before using it on your face.

How to know your skin type: 2. The Blotting sheet method

A blotting sheet is a highly absorbent type of paper or other material that is used to absorb an excess oil on the face.  You can buy a blotting sheet in any make up store or on amazon. The blotting sheet method is a fast and very effective method to tell your skin type.

You will  cleanse your face before going to bed. Do not use moisturizer after the cleanse, for effective results. In the morning, do not cleanse your face again. Simply do the test. Blot the key areas of your face by gently patting, do not rub, since you are likely to interfere with your skin’s natural oil. Blot the T-zone, forehead, cheeks and jaw area and the ara under your eyes.

Dry skin type:  If the blotting sheet will have picked very little or no oil from most parts of your face, then you have a dry skin.

Oily skin type: If the blotting sheet is saturated with oil from most parts of your face like forehead, nose, under your eyes and cheeks, then you have an oily skin.

Normal skin type: If the blotting sheet has more oil from your nose and forehead and around your nose area than from your cheeks, then its a clear sign that you have a normal/ mixed skin type.

Sensitive skin type: The blotting sheet might have little to no oil, just like with the dry skin test. But a better way to determine sensitive skin type is the naked face method as discussed above.

How to know your skin type: 3. The visual test.

Be your own dermatologist. No one can be a better dermatologist to you better than yourself. You know your skin so well. You look at yourself in a mirror daily and notice all the changes. So you can as well do this visual test at home rather than visiting a dermatologist.

You are going to be keen and observe in this test, you will need an enlarging mirror for better observation. If you don’t have an enlarging mirror, its okay, a normal mirror will do it too.

You may want to do this after cleansing your face before applying a moisturizer or an products on your face.

Dry skin type: If you have a dry skin, you will observe that your pores are small, and also might feel tight.

Oily skin type: Oily skins always have large pores. These large pores easily get clogged with the oil produced by the body.

Normal/mixed skin type: With normal skin, you will barely notice the pores.

Sensitive skin type: People with sensitive skin often have normal to large pores. Again this depends on some factors, like if the skin was irritated or not.

How to know your skin type: 4. The tactile test.

In this method, You will also be your own Dermatologist. Remember, nobody can do this better than your own self. Here you are going to wash your face with a cleanser, gently dry it and not apply anything on it.

This is a good method to use if you don’t have blotting sheets. It is not the most accurate test, but it works. You will wait for five to six hours. Remember you should not add moisture to your face until you have done your test.

After the five or six hours, you are going to touch/ feel your face texture.

Dry skin type:If you can feel rough patches, and your face feels tight, then you have a dry skin.

Oily skin type: If all or most parts of your face feels moist and is shiny/ greasy, then you have an oily skin.

Normal/ mixed skin type: If your T-zone feel moist, and is a bit shiny, while your cheeks feel dry and tight, then you must have combination of dry and oily skin.

Sensitive skin type: If your face stings after cleansing, don’t even wait  for the five hours, immediately apply a moisture, this is a clear sign of a sensitive skin.
